Iowa Indian Bands, Gens and Clans

Many tribes have sub-tribes, bands, gens, clans and phratry.  Often very little information is known or they no longer exist.  We have included them here to provide more information about the tribes.

Chedtokhanye (big buffalo bull). A subgens of the Arukhwa, the Buffalo gens of the Iowa.

Chedtoyine (young buffalo bull). A subgens of the Arukhwa, the Buffalo gens of the Iowa.

Cheghita. An Iowa gens. Its sub gentes are Nachiche, Khrahune, Khrakreye, and Khrapathan.

Cheposhkeyine (swelled young buffalo bull). A subgens of the Arukhwa, the Buffalo gens of the Iowa.

Cheyinye (buffalo calf). A subgens of the Arukhwa, the Buffalo gens of the Iowa.

Homayine (Ho′ma yiñ′-e, ‘young elk’). A subgens of the Khotachi, the Elk gens of the Iowa. Dorsey in 15th Rep. B. A. E., 238, 1897.

Hotachi (elk). A Missouri gens, coordinate with the Khotachi gens of the Iowa.
