Sevier County 1830 Tennessee Census

Published in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1956 and distributed by the Genealogical Publishing Company of Baltimore, Maryland, Sevier County, Tennessee: Population Schedule of the United States Census of 1830 (Fifth Census) provides a transcription of the often difficult to read, Sevier County 1830 Tennessee census. Authored by Blanche C. McMahon and Pollyanna Creekmore, this meticulous reproduction of the original census record sheds light on the people of Sevier County in 1830.

Tennessee joined the Union on June 1, 1796. However, with only two known exceptions, no federal decennial census records before 1820 have survived. The 1810 census records for Rutherford County (located in Middle Tennessee) were made public in 1933 by Martha Lou Houston from Washington, D.C. Additionally, a partial original copy of the 1810 census for Grainger County is preserved in the McClung Collection at the Lawson McGhee Library in Knoxville, Tennessee, which anticipates publishing the document soon.

Apart from the 1810 Grainger County records, there are no existing population schedules for any county in East Tennessee prior to 1830.

Sevier County was established in 1794 from a segment of Jefferson County, and since then, only minor adjustments have been made to its boundaries. Nearly all of Sevier County’s public records were lost in a fire on March 26, 1856. To trace the county’s early settlers, it is recommended to examine records from neighboring counties such as Blount, Cocke, Jefferson, and Knox.

The 1830 Sevier County Population Schedule included here has been reproduced from a microfilm version of the original document kept at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The reproduction retains the original page numbers on the left side and does not alter the spelling of names as recorded by the enumerator, George W. Porter. Index references are available.

The maps and charts featured in this volume are derived from enlargements of the “Map of the State of Tennessee Taken from Survey” by Matthew Rhea, published in Columbia, Tennessee, in 1832.
