CHARNER A. McCOLPIN, an enterprising citizen and farmer of Todd County, was born May 25, 1843, on the farm where he now resides; he is the sixth of eleven children-foui girls and seven boys-three boys and three girls now living, born to Charner H. and Martha (Jones) McColpin, natives of North Carolina and of Irish descent. Subject's father was a son of Joseph and Nancy (Franklin) McColpin. Subject received a fair common school education; he was reared on the farm and lived with his parents till twenty-five years of age, when he engaged in mercantile business; he spent two years at Bivinsville, Todd County, one year at Elkton, and two in Lovelaceville, Ballard County, Ky. He then returned to farming, which he now continues on 350 acres of land, 175 of which are in cultivation. He was married February 25, 1874, to Bettie A. Stephens, of Graves County, Ky., daughter of Isaac N. and Bettie A. (Wilson) Stephens, natives of Graves County, Ky. The father was a son of Harvey and (Washburn) Stephens; the mother a daughter of Samuel and Isabella (Davis) Wilson. This marriage was blessed with five children: Wallace E., Viola, Ora May, Martha E. and Edgar (deceased). Mr. McColpin is a strong advocate of good common schools. He was made a Mason in Lovelaceville Lodge, 157, and is an honorable and upright citizen. He and his wife are both members of the Baptist Church.
