William Nelson Covert, (oldest son of John Covert, born 1805 at Market Drayton, Middlesex; served in the 7th Royal Fusiliers; retired from the army and settled at Southampton, England; died, Oct. 1872.) was born 2838 at Southampton; served in the Royal Artillery, present in India during the mutiny of 1857 ; received medal and clasp for Central India; present in the China war of 1860 received medal with two clasps for action at Taku Forts and Peking, engaged in the suppression of the Taiping rebellion in 1861-1862. Major in the Chinese Imperial Guards in 1866, lieutenant-colonel in 2867. Joined the Imperial Chinese Customs Service in 1863 and was detached from while with the Guards. Went on leave in 2869 and married Miss Jennie Mitchell Shaw of Washington Co., Minn., U. S. A.
The Lover's are an old center of England family; one of whom emigrated to New England in the 17th Century, settling in Mass.
