Stevens, Joseph

The following data is extracted from Matthew Woodruff of Farmington Connecticut.

Joseph Stevens, born Billerica, Mass., Oct. 20, 1720. Died in Winthrop, Maine, Oct. 2, 1791. Married Elizabeth Emery, born Billerica, 1723. Died Winthrop, Maine, Feb. 28, 1798. They moved to Winthrop, Me. from New Ipswich, N. H. in 1769. The names of their children were:

  1. Elizabeth, b. Oct. 10, 1744.
  2. Joseph, Jr., b. April 8, 1746.
  3. Joseph, Jr., b. Oct. 31, 1747.
  4. Ames, b. July 16, 1749.
  5. Samuel, b. April 28, 1751.
  6. Mercy, b. Nov. 23, 1752.
  7. Abel, b. April 27, 1755.
  8. Esther, b. Oct. 6, 1756.
  9. Ephrain, b. June 29, 1758.
  10. (2) William, b. July 4, 1760; d. Winthrop, Me., Sept. 17, 1823.
  11. Jonas, b. April 20, 1763.

(2) Captain William Stevens, Joseph (1) and his wife, Susanna Whiting; she was born April 23, 1763 (twin to Joanna). She was daughter of Sargeant Jonathan Whiting, Revolutionary War. (See Mass. S. & S. Rev_ War. Page 172.) Married at Wrentham, Mass.. Oct. 29, 1750, Elloenai Thurston, daughter of Daniel and Debora (Pond) Thurston, born in Wrentham, May 19, 1728, died Jan. 23, 1770. (See Whiting Genealogy, Page 39.)

William was Captain in Col. Lambs (Artillery) Reg., Jan. 1. 1777 to December 31, 1779. Also Jan. 1, 1780 to December 31, 1780. (See Mass. soldiers and Sailors in War of Revolution, Vol. XIV, Pages 986-7).

Capt. William and Susanna (Whiting) Stevens had children as follows:

  1. Asenath, b. July 11, 1784.
  2. Susanna, b. Oct. 19, 1785.
  3. Martha, b. May 31, 1787.
  4. Elioenai, b-. Feb. 17, 1789; m. Alfred Chandler.
  5. Jane, b. Dec. 20, 1790.
  6. John, b. Sept. 22, 1793.
  7. Joanna, b. March 21, 1795; m. Samuel Morrill.
  8. William, Jr., b. July 28, 1797.
  9. Bathsheba, b. Nov. 2, 1799; m. Thomas Richardson.
  10. (3) Thurston W.. b. Oct. 16. 1803; m. Mary Robinson Smith.
  11. Josephus, b. Sept. 16, 1806; m. Ann Clark.

(3) Thurston W. Stevens, William (2), Joseph (1) married Mary Robinson Smith. She was born in Readfield. Me., in 1805. She was the daughter of Reuben Smith, who married Betsy Robinson, of Exeter, N. H., who was a direct descendant from Rev: John-Robinson. who started out with the Pilgrims from Speedwell and put back.

Thurston W. and Mary (Robinson) Stevens had children as follows:

  1. (4) Martha J., b. Feb. 14, 1830; d. Boston, March 17. 1904; m. William L. Sturtevant, March 28, 1855, at Winthrop, Me. (See Sturtevant Genealogy.)
  2. Mary Frances, b. June 21, 1833; d. Jan. 22, 1874; m. Albert A. Scott, in 1855.
  3. Charles Willard, b. Dec. 17, 1849; m. Jan. 18, 1874, Ella F Moody, daughter of Levi K. Moody and his wife, Eliza A. (Wilson) Moody. Charles W. Stevens and wife, Ella, had daughter, Alice Mary Stevens, born May 26. 1885, in Winthrop, Me.
  4. Thurston Whiting, Jr., b. April 29, 1847; d. Nov. 3, 1895.

(4) Martha J. (Stevens) and her husband, William L. Sturtevant had children as follows:

  1. Albert, b. Jan. 4, 1856. Boston; d. Oct. 31, 1880; m. June 5, 1878, Ada Louise Eliot of Reading, Mass.
  2. (5) Fannie, b. June 4, 1858, in Boston; m. Feb. 18. 1880, Fred'k O. Woodruff. (See Woodruff Genealogy.)

(5) Fannie Sturtevant Woodruff (5), Martha J. (Stevens) Sturtevant (4), Thurston W. Stevens (3), William Stevens (2), Joseph Stevens (1) and her husband, Fred'k O. Woodruff had children as follows:

  1. (6) Lewis Sturtevant Woodruff, b. in Boston, Jan. 5, 1881. (See Woodruff Genealogy.)
  2. Albert William Woodruff, b. Boston. April 2, 1882; (See Woodruff Genealogy).
