Mi'kmaw Bands in New Brunswick

  • Big Cove First Nation
The Mi'kmaqs of New Brunswick were Kent County's first inhabitants. Their nomadic life style led them as far as Prince Edward Island in the summer, while Big Cove represented a better shelter in the winter. The main body of the tribe stayed at what is presently called Richibucto, originally Melsigpogtog, meaning "Strong Point".
  • Bouctouche First Nation
  • Burnt Church First Nations
  • Eel Ground
Eel Ground principally occupies lands adjoining the City of Miramichi, New Brunswick, and members of the two communities have no doubt interacted from the time of earliest European settlement. About 1648, Nicolas Denys, Sieur de Fronsac, established a fort and trading post nearby, "on the North side of the Miramichi, at the forks of the river".
  • Fort Folly First Nation
Fort Folly and its members have a long history in the Maritimes. Although the actual reserve, Fort Folly, didn't come into existence until 1840, the Mi'kmaq people who came to reside on this reserve were habitating the area for many thousands of years.
  • Indian Island First Nation
  • Metepenagiag
Known as the Village of Thirty Centuries, we are the proud caretakers of two National Historic Sites – The Augustine Mound and the Oxbow . Through the creation of the future "Metepenagiag Heritage Park", our community development plans include the commemoration of these two sites and the preservation of our community history and Mi’kmaq culture.
  • Pabineau First Nation
Taking a holistic approach to community development that is focused on the mental, physical and spiritual well-being of our members and their families, will assist us in our building social and economic strength and stability throughout the Pabineau First Nation community."

Oromocto First Nation

St. Mary's First Nation
St. Mary's First Nation is one of six Maliseet Nations along the St. John River.
It is a vital part of New Brunswick's Capital City of Fredericton.

Tobique

Woodland Metis Tribe
The Woodland Métis Tribe's rich past draws on a strong heritage and colorful history of a people in a land which has been our home since time immemorial. Historical documentation commissioned by the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples makes it increasingly apparent that there is a diversity among Métis peoples in Canada which must be addressed.

Woodstock First Nation
Most of our history was gathered from people's thoughts and remembrance of the stories that were once told to them. The elders loved to speak to the younger generations because then they would be sure to be around for more generations-having their collective memories flourished to that of others.
