Ponca Indian Bands, Gens and Clans
Posted By Dennis Partridge On In Native American | No Comments
Many tribes have sub-tribes, bands, gens, clans and phratry. Often very little information is known or they no longer exist. We have included them here to provide more information about the tribes.
Chizhu. The 1st Ponka half-tribe, composed of 4 gentes.
Dhighida. A Ponca gens, divided into the sub-gentes Sindeagdhe and Wamiitazhi, according to Dorsey. The meaning of the name is lost.
Dtakhtikianpandhatazhi (does not eat deer and elk). Given as a subgens of the Ponca gens Nikapashna, but seemingly an error.
Dtedhezedhatazhi (does not eat buffalo tongues). A subgens of the Ponca gens Washabe. J. O. Dorsey also gives it as a Nikapashna gens, but this is seemingly an error.
Dtepaitazhi (does not touch a buffalo head or skull). A subgens of the Washabe gens of the Ponca.
Dtesinde (buffalo tail). Given as a subgens of the Washabe gens of the Ponca.
Dtesindeitazhi (does not touch a buffalo tail). Given as a subgens of the Ponca gens Nikapashna.
Hisada (legs stretched out stiff , referring to a dead quadruped). A Ponca gens on the Chinzhu side of the camp circle.
