Illness Claims “Virgie” Burford Elvie Burford, Known to her many friends as Virgie, passed away at a La Grande hospital Wednesday September 12, 1956 after an extended illness. A Union, Oregon housewife, Mrs. Burford was 62 years of age, being born September 27, 1893 in High Valley near Union, Oregon. She resided in Union county all of her life, and was marred to Frank Burford December 3, 1913. Surviving are her husband, Frank Burford, Union; two daughters, Mrs. Ada Cowles of Baker and Mrs. Reta Connell of Hinkle, Oregon. Two brothers are Norman Ross of Huron and Archie Ross of Klamath Falls; three sisters, Mrs. Iva Burford, Union; Mrs. Ellen Alexander, of Union and Mrs Isabelle Hutchison of La Grande; Two grandsons, Gordon Cowles and Leslie Connell. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral was held Saturday September 15, 1956 at 2 o’clock in the Methodist church in Union with Dr. V. A. Bolen officiating. Union, Union County, Oregon Archie Burford, native of High Valley and a graduate of Cove high school, died unexpectedly Friday in Glendale, Cal. Funeral services for Archie Reed Burford, who died Feb. 10 at his home in Glendale, Calif., were held at 10:00 a.m. on Feb. 14 in the Little Church of the Flowers, under the direction of a Los Angeles mortuary. Interment was at Forest Lawn memorial park. Rev. Palmquist, D.D. of Wilshire Methodist church officiated. Burford was born June 28, 1892 at Cove. He was married to Lula M. Davis on Oct. 14, 1916. Survivors include his widow; a son Howard Burford, La Grande; a daughter, Mrs. LaVaughn Gauthier of Glendale, and three grandchildren. Burford, Frank Leslie – Obituary

Union, Union County, Oregon Funeral services for Mr. Frank Leslie Burford, Of Union, 82, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Methodist Church in Union under the direction of the Beatty Chapel. The Rev. James H. Soden of the Calvary Baptist Church in Baker will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot in the Union Cemetery. Mr. Burford died early Monday morning, Jan 31, (1972) after a short illness. Mr. Burford was born on Oct. 1, 1889 at Cove, the son of James Samuel and Minnie Rundall Burford. He attended schools in Cove, and farmed in High Valley. He worked for over 20 years for the Hess Lumber Company in Union. He was very interested in baseball, and played with the Alexander baseball team of Cove. Mr. Burford had been in Baker since early fall to spend the winter with his daughter. He married Elva Virgie Ross in La Grande, Dec. 3, 1913. She died in 1956. He is survived by two daughters, Ada Cowles of Baker, and Reta Connell of Portland; one brother, Claude Burford of Gervais; two sisters, Hazel Hartley of Cove and a sister, Letha in California: three grandchildren, Gordon Cowles, Leslie and Margaret Connell, all of Portland and by numerous nieces and nephews. Burford, Ida Matilda – Obituary

Union, Union County, Oregon Ida Matilda Burford, wife of William Burford, died in Union Friday of last week and the funeral took place Saturday. Mrs. Burford leaves a husband and young child. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. V. Davis, of High Valley. The immediate cause of her death was pneumonia. Ida Matilda Burford was born on October 9, 1890, at High Valley. She was the second daughter and third child of nine children of Robert and Viola Davis, and was married to William P. Burford November 20th, 1913. Of this union one child, Alvin William, was born. Mrs. Burford was an invalid for the last two years and passed away on Friday, June 30th, 1916, from a complication of diseases. She leaves many friends and relatives here and at other points to mourn her departure. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. A. Brown, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Union, Union County, Oregon Ivy M. Burford of Union, died Wednesday at a local hospital at the age of 80. Mrs. Burford was born on September 16, 1890 at Union, the daughter of Frank and Emma Ross. She lived in Union County all her life and attended schools in Union. She was a member of the Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid gardner. Survivors include a son, Clifford of Eugene, Ore.; sisters, Ellen Alexander, Union; and Belle Hutchinson, La Grande, brothers, Archie Ross, Klamath Falls, Ore.; and Norman Ross, La Grande; seven grandchildren and other relatives. Cove, Union County, Oregon Pioneer, Passes; Burial Thursday James S Burford, 76 year old pioneer of Union County, died this morning (June 25, 1935) at the Grande Ronde hospital after a short illness. (He was born February 19, 1859 per funeral card). Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist church at Cove with Rev. Smits in charge of the services. Burial will take place at the family plot in the Cove Cemetery. Friends may view the body at the chapel of Walters Funeral Home. Mr. Burford crossed the plains to Oregon at the age of 17 years and has been a resident of Cove the last 53 years. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge at Cove. Burford, Paula Errolo – Obituary

Union, Oregon Paula Errolo Burford, 80, of College Place, Wash., and formerly of Union died Sept. 17 at her daughter’s home. The funeral was held today at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater. Burial was at the Milton-Freewater Cemetery. Mrs. Burford was born March 25, 1926, to Joseph Coleman and Katie Rosilla Deuel Lay in Medical Springs. She graduated from Union High School, and attended Brigham Young University. She moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where she worked for Western Union. On Sept. 16, 1949, she married Clifford Edwin Burford in Los Angeles. They returned to Oregon and lived in Milton-Freewater for several years. She was a homemaker, and loved music and the arts and provided lots of hands-on creative experiences for her children. After her husband’s retirement, the couple moved to Walla Walla in 1990. She was active in her church, and enjoyed oil painting, cake decorating, creative writing, sewing, crafts, genealogy. She was known for her sense of humor. Survivors include children, Blaine Burford of Prescott, Ariz., Kim Burford of College Place, Paul Burford of Sherwood, Zane Burford of Queen Creek, Ariz., Erralee Cleveland of McMinnville and Paula Mooso of College Place; a sister, Gay Lerwill of Redding, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and other relatives.
