Ryder, James Bartlett “Jimmy” – Obituary

Baker City, Oregon

James (Jimmy) Bartlett Ryder, 78, a lifelong Baker City resident, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

His graveside service will be today at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, at Mount. Hope Cemetery, with Pastor Joe Bush officiating.

Viewing was held on Wednesday, March 12, from noon to 8 p.m. at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel.

Mr. Ryder was born March 25, 1924, in Baker City to Horace B. and Edna Maude (Barton) Ryder. He graduated from St. Francis Academy in 1942.

After graduation he moved to Portland with his brothers, Joe and John, to work in the shipyards as a welder. In 1943, he returned to Baker City and was employed by Pacific Fruit and Produce.

In 1944, with his brothers, he began the trucking company of Ben’s Transfer and Storage. The successful business was sold in 1974. He then went to work for Baker Redi-Mix driving trucks until his retirement.

He married the love of his life, Marjorie E. Moeller in Reno, Nev., in the late 40s. He was always a very devoted husband and father.

Some of his greatest pleasures were fishing, bird hunting, traveling with his family, visiting the ocean, digging clams, working crossword puzzles, going on long rides and making rugs. He was a lifetime member of the Baker Elks Lodge 338.

Jim was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Margie, his parents, and his two brothers, Ben and John.

He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Carol and Keith Harris, Salem, and Joy and Don McAndie, La Grande; grandchildren, Jennifer Harris, Salem, Kyle McAndie, Bend and Todd McAndie, La Grande; brother and sister-in- law, Joe and Donna Ryder; sister, Anna May Ryder and brother-in-law Gregg Sherman, Baker City, and several nieces and nephews.

Contributions in Mr. Ryder’s memory may be made to the American Lung Association or the charity of one’s choice in care of Gray’s West & Co., P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814.
