Arch Long Dies

At the age of 79 years Archie Jackson Long passed away Saturday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 1:30 pm at the West Chapel with Rev. Merle W. Burres officiating and interment at the cemetery in Haines.

Mr. Long was born April 23, 1886 at Muddy Creek, the son of pioneer parents Alonzo and Julia Taylor Long. Alonzo had immigrated West in 1854 from Illinois to Linn County and then moved to Muddy Creek in 1872.

Arch was the last remaining member of a family of 15, another, a sister, Mrs. Clara Welch, having died but a few months ago. Mr. Long had his early schooling in Baker County and was married to Lizzie C. Shock in Baker July 23, 1905. He was a life long resident of Baker County having farmed nearly forty years in the Haines Community and when he retired from farming in the late 20’s had a place on Muddy Creek just above the Old Oregon Trail highway.

After that he was employed in the electrical department at Cornucopia Gold mine. He worked in the shipyards in Portland during WWII and then was custodian at the Baker County Courthouse until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife Lizzie C. Long; one son Floyd Long of Baker; five daughters, Mrs. Delmar (Beulah) Bell of Redmond; Mrs. Wilber (Mabel) Dinnick, Mrs. Desmond (Georgia) Sieg, Mrs. Alford (Dora) Allen all of Baker; and Mrs. Omer (Pansy) Maxwell of Haines; and 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
