Gibbons, John Waldron; manufacturer; born, Cleveland, June :9, 1844; son of John and Eleanor Fitzpatrick Gibbons; educated, public schools and Cleveland Academy; director of police 1891-1892; Republican; color-sergeant, 150th Ohio Vol. Infantry, May 4, 1864, till close of Civil War; colonel 5th Regiment of Infantry, 0. N. G., 1886-1891; vice commander Army & Navy Post, G. A. R.; vice pres. 150th Ohio Vol. Ass’n; served as Guard of Honor at obsequies of Pres. Abraham Lincoln, and commanded Knights Templar escort at obsequies of Pres. James A. Garfield; Marshal of Cleveland Chamber of Commerce at the funeral of Pres. William McKinley; started business as supt. Union Elevator Co., 1865; Gardner, Burt & Co., Gardner, Clark & Co., junior partner, until 1888, when he organized the Springsteen Medicine Co.; mgr. and prin. owner; director Underwriter’s Land Co., and American Dynamite Co.; member National Geographical Society, Military Service Institution of the U. S.; one of the founders of the Cleveland Fresh Air Camp; member Iris Lodge, Cleveland Chapter, Cleveland Council, Past Commander, Oriental Commandery Knights Templar; member of Consistory Scottish Rite 32, charter member Al Koran Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine; member Criterion Lodge, Knights of Pythias; Masonic Club, Chamber of Commerce (vice pres., 1876).
