Lewis Churchill

The Churchills are of English descent. John1 Churchill came in 1643 to Plymouth, Mass. He m. Dec. 18, 1644, Hannah Pontus and had six children. The generations following are: William2, b. in 1657; m. Jan. 17, 1683, Lydia Bryant. Had eight children. William3, their eldest son, b. Aug. 2, 1685; m. Jan. 4, 1704, Ruth Bryant. Eleven children. Nathaniel4, their son, b. May 11, 1718; m. June 4, 1741, Susannah McFarland. Seven children. Nathaniel5, b. May 10, 1746; m. Dec. 27, 1770, Deborah Wright. Six children. He served in the Revolution.

1. LEWIS6 CHURCHILL, eldest son of Nathaniel, was b. Dec. 12, 1771, in Plympton, Mass. Came to Cornish soon after 1797. A farmer and carpenter, active and agile even to old age. He d. July 15, 1855, aged 83; m. first, Desire Barker Brewster; m. second, Patty, dau. of Stephen and Keziah Thurston, b. in 1784; m. third, in 1826, Ruth Quimby, b. in 1783 and d. Dec. 7, 1860. Children by first wife, all b. in Cornish except the first two, who were b. in Plymouth:
i. DEBORAH, b. Oct. 22, 1794; d. May 3, 1803.
ii. HOSEA, b. Jan. 18,1797; m. Oct. 18, 1820, Polly Hardy of Grantham. Lived chiefly in New York. No children.
iii. NATHAN BREWSTER, b. April 17, 1799. Lived in IA.
iv. LOUIS, b. Jan. 15, 1802; m. April 19, 1849, Mrs. Rosamond (Rickard) Jacobs. Two children. Rem. West and lived in IA.
v. EDNA, b. Aug. 14, 1804.
vi. DEBORAH, b. March 24, 1807; m. June, 1832, Ansel Barnes of Hardwick, Mass.; lived in Pelham, Mass. Eight children. She d. Feb. 14, 1868.
vii. NATHANIEL, b. April 12,1809; m. Maria —–. Res. in Penn. and Cal. One dau.
2. viii. BARKER BREWSTER, b. Feb. 4, 1815.
ix. LYDIA, b. June 1, 1819; m. March 26, 1844, Ephraim Nelson. Settled in Croydon. Six children, all b. there. Shed. Oct. 9, 1881.
x. EMILY, b. in 1821, and d. at 12 years of age.
xi. A child, b. and d. unnamed in 1827.
xii. SARAH, b. Jan. 28, 1830: m. -, Lemuel Benway of Cornish. One child, Arthur L. (See Benway.) She d. May 12, 1874.
