Michels, Cecilia Jane Quinn – Obituary

Mrs. Cecilia J. Michels, widow of George Michels, died late Sunday in the Ellensburg General Hospital, after a prolonged illness.

Mrs. Michels was born at Scothaven, Pa., in 1867, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James J. Quinn. At the age of 17, she came to Timberline, Mont., in the company of her father and brother, who were associated with the development of new coal fields for the use of the Northern Pacific Railway on its extension to the Northwest. They were joined at Timberline by her mother and brothers and sisters, and early the following year, in 1886, the family proceeded to Roslyn, traveling over the newly constructed railroad to Ellensburg, which was then the end of its line. The journey to Roslyn was completed by wagon. In 1888, they left Roslyn to go to Seattle and establish there their permanent home.

She was married to George Michels, in Seattle, May 28, 1889, and returned to Ellensburg, which has been her home since. She has been a member of St. Andrew’s Parish since that time. She was preceded in death two years ago by her husband.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. F. A. Graaff of Ellensburg, and five sons, C. B. Michels of Ellensburg, E. G. Michels of Tacoma, C. J. Michels of Seattle, Rev. Fr. John Michels, Dominican Order, Oakland, Calif., and B. F. Michels, Helena, Mont.

Surviving also are two brothers and five sisters: John J. Quinn and William V. Quinn, Mrs. John N. Jackson and Mrs. Margaret Study of Seattle, sister Mary Vincentia, Dominican Order of Tacoma, Sister Agnes Mary, Sisters of Notre Dame, Belmont, Calif.; and Mrs. E. A. McGrath of Portland. There are 21 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Prayers will be held at St. Andrews’ Church this evening at 7:30, and funeral services willl be from St. Andrews’ Catholic Church, Wednesday, April 16, at 9 a.m.
