Biography of James M. Brewer

JAMES M. BREWER. He whose name heads this sketch has been a resident of Searcy County, Arkansas, since 1871, and during that time he has made a comfortable income for himself and family, has shown that he is a man of public spirit, liberal, generous and highminded, and has made numerous warm friends. His birth occurred in Franklin County, Tennessee, September 21, 1833, a son of Zadock and Mary (Brumley) Brewer, who were also born on Tennessee soil, and with them he moved to Arkansas in his boyhood and settled on a farm in Polk County. Later the family moved to Conway County and there the father was called from this life in 1865, his widow surviving him but one year. Of a family of ten children born to them but five are living at the present time: William C., Minerva, wife of John Sowers; Sally (Counts), Sarah (Casper), and James M. Those deceased were: Joseph D., John E., Zadock, Henry C. and Jacob. James M. Brewer resided for a long term of years in Johnson County, Arkansas, and was married there to Emeline Weeks, daughter of J. M. Weeks. Elgin, Oregon Janette L. Beeler, 59, of Elgin died Aug. 28. Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 4 at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5 at the Elgin Cemetery. Mrs. Beeler was born April 7, 1947, to J.D. and Loys Osborn Thwreat in Mena, Ark. She lived most of her life in Laramie, Wyo. She worked as a janitor for the University of Wyoming and on Aug. 5 moved to Elgin to be closer to her mother and her family. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and enjoyed photography, birds and animals. She was known for her work ethic. Survivors include her mother; a son, Gene Beeler; siblings, David Thwreat, Fred Thwreat and Dorsie Terrell, all of Elgin, and Becky Ginsbaugh of Estacada; and other relatives. Her father and two children, Julie and Jessica Beeler, died earlier. Cummings, Ustious G., Sr. – Obituary

Baker County, Oregon Ustious G. Cummings Sr., 84, of Baker City, died Feb. 23, 2003. His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Pastor Nathaniel Neff of the Lighthouse Church in Baker City will officiate. Inurnment will be in the veteran’s section of Mount Hope Cemetery after the chapel service. A reception will be held at the Calvary Baptist Church in Baker City. Ustious was born Feb. 13, 1919, at Potter, Ark., to Richard and Mary Cummings. He moved to California in the 1930s. In 1942 he entered the U.S. Army to serve his country during World War II. He served in the Wildcat 322nd Infantry Regiment. He was awarded several decorations and citations. Ustious was discharged in 1945 with the rank of staff sergeant. He then worked as a steel worker at the U.S. Steel Co., at Pittsburg, Calif., for the next 30 years. After his retirement, he continued to serve the public for another 20 years. He did community work for the senior citizens and government give away, providing food for the less fortunate. He really enjoyed helping people. Ustious and his wife, Lola, moved to Baker City in September of 2000.
