Start Now La Grande, Union County, Oregon Mrs. Oscar Jacobson Jr. died at the hospital in Ontario, Saturday, Dec. 24 following a very short illness. She took sick suddenly and was taken to the Ontario hospital where she was operated on three times but they were not successful. Ruth Watkins was born in La Grande in 1902 and has lived in this community practically her entire life where she was well known and highly respected by all. She was married to Oscar Jacobson Jr. in 1920. She is survived by her husband, also her father, two sisters and five brothers, her mother, a sister and brother having passed away a few years ago. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. from the M.E. church of this town and interment was made in the North Powder cemetery. Viewing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lighthouse United Pentecostal Church in Island City. Mr. Evins was born Aug. 18, 1953, to Raymond and Evangeline Kendall Evins in Ontario. The family moved numerous times before settling in La Grande. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, and played baseball for the San Diego Padres organization in the early 1970s. He recorded numerous songs at the studio of Buck Owens in Bakersfield, Calif., and married Cyndi Habiger on June 22, 1986, in La Grande. He drove log trucks, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching his sons play baseball. Survivors include his wife of La Grande; children, Kacey Evins, Trent Evins and Jeremei Evins, all of La Grande; a brother, Ray Lee Evins of Ontario; sisters, Marla Nevill of Buckley, Wash., Nadine Pulse of Grand Ronde; and other relatives. Following his death she married Valdemar Diaz on Feb. 11, 1944. They moved to Nyssa as migrant workers. Mrs. Diaz was the first president of the first Hispanic PTA in Nyssa and was active in AARP and the Union County Senior Center. She was an avid seamstress, filling many homes with Holly Hobbie quilts. She enjoyed playing nickel slots hoping to hit the jackpot. She enjoyed traveling and sharing stories. She was sad to leave La Grande and her friends but enjoyed living with her family in Ontario for the last few months of her life. Born Feb. 18, 1933, Carolyn loved animals, especially horses. She also took in young people who needed a safe place. Carolyn passed on a strong love of family connections, family members said. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband and life-long soulmate Charles “Dewey” Lovelace who died in December 2005 and her son, Bryan Mack. Preston was born July 7, 1921, to Lawrence and Mabel Brown Burnett in Island City. He graduated from La Grande High School in 1938 and served in the Navy prior to World War II. Preston married Madaline E. Rhoads in Portland. He worked for the Oregon Highway Division for 42 years and was a resident engineer on many highway projects. The family lived in Hood River, Roseburg, North Bend, John Day and Baker before settling in Ontario in 1962. They lived there for 39 years and then moved to Pendleton in 2001. Preston enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting and camping. He spent a lot of time with his grandchildren, family and friends. After retirement, Preston and Madaline enjoyed traveling and spending time at their cabin on the Owyhee Reservoir. He was a member of the Episcopal Church.
