Biography of Francis Hibbard Lamberson

Francis Hibbard Lamberson has been a factor in the agricultural development and business affairs of Rice County for a great many years. He came here comparatively poor, had prospered by his own efforts, and still owned a large amount of farm land in the county, though he is living retired at Lyons. He was born in Allegany County, New York, May 24, 1847. His people in the paternal line were of Holland Dutch stock and were settlers in New York in colonial times. His grandfather, John Lamberson, was born in Herkimer County, New York, spent his life as a farmer and died at Rushford in that state in 1867. Anson Lamberson, father of Francis H., was born in Herkimer County in 1824, made farming his main business, though he was also extensively interested in cattle and livestock dealing and he died near Rochester, New York, in 1902, at the age of seventy-eight. He became affiliated with the republican party upon its organization. He married Amy Hibbard, who was born at Warsaw, New York, in 1826 and died in Lyons, Kansas, in 1910. Her father, Jonathan F. Hibbard, was born at Orwell, Rutland County, Vermont, in 1793, was a soldier in the War of 1812, and after that struggle he settled on what was then the western frontier at Warsaw in Wyoming County, New York. Biography of Hon. Rufus Mallory

HON. RUFUS MALLORY. – Mr. Rufus Mallory, one of the most prominent members of the legal fraternity in the State of Oregon, is of New England stock, his parents having been born and raised in Connecticut. Our subject himself was born on the 10th of June, 1831, at Coventry, Chenango county, New York, from where he moved with his parents in the fall of that year to Alleghany county, and six years later to Steuben county in the same state. In the latter place he resided until 1855, when he went to New London, Iowa, where he remained until 1858. In September of that year he started for Oregon, reaching Jacksonville on the 1st of January, 1859. From there he proceeded northward as far as Roseburg, where he remained until the fall of 1862, when he moved to Salem, having in the meantime married, June 24, 1860, Miss Lucy A. Rose, daughter of Aaron Rose, founder and proprietor of the town of Roseburg. From 1862 until December, 1887, he maintained his residence at Salem, when he moved to Portland, Oregon, and has since made that city his home. Biographical Sketch of H. A. McKee

H. A. McKee of Santa Ana, was born in Friendship, Allegany County, New York. At the age of seventeen years he entered the army, enlisting in the Twenty-third New York Volunteer Infantry, and served two years; then for several years he was engaged in the live-stock business in Kansas, and for a few years in merchandising at Wichita; married in Junction City, Kansas, in 1869, to Miss Jennie Paxton, a native of the Buckeye State. She has been a school-teacher; taught her first term in her native State and subsequently in West Virginia, Illinois, Kansas and Texas. Mr. McKee moved to Texas in 1874, and for a period of fifteen years was successfully engaged in the rearing of sheep. In 1888 he came to California and bought a residence near Santa Ana, where he is now enjoying life and expects to spend the remainder of his days. Biography of Burr Dexter

To this veteran of many conflicts on the arena of life’s battles, who has also fought in defense of the flag of freedom, while he has ever demeaned himself with wisdom and valor, we are pleased to accord a representation in this volume of the chronicles of Wallowa County, since also today he is one of the venerable builders of our county and a respected and influential citizen. Mr. Dexter was born in Allegany County, New York, on February 2,1830, being the son of Knight and Lucinda (Mapes) Dexter, natives respectively of Virginia and New York. The father was a contractor and builder, operating in New York and Ohio. Our subject was one of the home circle beneath the parental roof until he had attained the age of nineteen and then started forth to net the ways of life for himself. He first came to Michigan and worked around St. John and Lansing, and continued until the year 1891. During this time, in the year 1862, he enlisted in the Twenty-second Michigan Infantry and served his time with a good record, being in the army of the Cumberland and participating in a number of battles.
