The purpose of this work was to present an accurate, concise account of the settlement, growth, and advancement of Bates County. The work begins with the establishment of Harmony Mission. The book may be divided into four sections - 1. Settlement (1821-1860); 2. War (1860-1865); 3. Recuperation (1865-1870); and 4. Development (1870-1900).
