About Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio Birth Records: 1891-1895

City of Toledo, Board of Health Birth Record Index, 1891-1895 Situated on the southern shores of Lake Erie, Toledo is the county seat of Lucas County, Ohio. The population of Lucas County swelled from 67,377 in 1880 to 102,296 by 1890, with the largest percentage of the population living within the City of Toledo. This database contains the index for birth records in the City of Toledo for the years 1891-1895, listing surname, Christian name, page of birth record, birthdate, sex, and parents names. Additional information may be obtained from the birth record from the City of Toledo Board of Health. All names were kept "as is" including spelling. Of note, until 1892 all were "normal" and in line with names seen & expected in that era. Then beginning somewhat in 1893 but more markedly in 1894 & 1895, many of the Christian names on the index seem to be Latin, with many Josephus, Josephum, Antonium, Rosaliam, Helenam, Joanne, etc. I don't know what the reason is, but you will likely get better results with a surname only search. The births listed are for those living within the city limits of Toledo, not the outlying areas of Lucas County. Those born outside of Toledo will be listed in the Lucas County Probate Court records. Those born in Toledo may be listed at the Toledo Board of Health, the Lucas County Probate Court, or both.
