About Marriage Bonds of Henrico County, Virginia, 1782-1853

Henrico County, created in 1634, extended indefinitely westward from Charles City County. One of the original eight shires of Virginia, it was the parent of ten pivotal counties, each located along the route of westward migration.

Its marriage bonds exist only from 1782 on, but they are relatively complete. The collection of 6,000 marriages recorded from 1782 to 1853 is one of the largest collections of marriages for a county ever published. Based on marriage bonds, they name parents, sureties, and guardians--in all, an additional 10,000 persons are named, most with relationships noted. In addition to the names of the prospective bride and groom and the bond date, other information provided sometimes includes references to former marriages, places of residence outside of Henrico County, and the names of witnesses. This is an invaluable tool for Virginia research.
