About Floyd County, Virginia, U.S., Births, 1853-1873

Home to over 9,000 residents in 1870, Floyd County is located in western Virginia and was created in 1831. This database is a collection of birth records from the county between 1853 and 1873. Taken from microfilm copies of the county birth register, it provides the name, race, sex, birth date, and parents' names. Page numbers refer to the original county register from which these records were taken. It contains the names of over 8,900 persons. For researchers of Virginian ancestors, this database can be a helpful source of information.

Records for the years 1856-1857 and 1859-1863 were unavailable for this collection. Additionally, only part of the records for 1873 were available for this collection.

Two copies of a county's birth register may exist, one kept by the county and one kept by the state. The county assessor or county commissioner of revenue would make a list of all births in that year, create a second copy, and send it to the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Richmond. The records of this database were transcribed from the register sent to Richmond and now located in the Library of Virginia. This index may not contain all persons born in the county. Illegible or difficult to read entries were not included to avoid the dissemination of incorrect or incomplete information.
