About Utah, U.S., Birth Registers, 1892-1944

While Salt Lake City and Ogden started registering births years earlier, and Park City began in 1892, county clerks became responsible for recording births in Utah as of 1898. This database is comprised of Utah birth registers for 26 Utah counties. Beaver County has births recorded for 1897 as well. Kane County births do not begin until 1900, and Piute County has births recorded only for 1898. For Daggett County (formed in 1918), check Uintah County; for Duchesne (1915), check Wasatch County. There are no registers for Millard County, and Weber County does not include records for Ogden.

Using the Records

Information found in the registers can include date of birth, sex, race, color, parents’ names, parents’ ages, child’s name, city, the name of the person reporting the birth, register entry number, and page number. Unfortunately, most of the registers did not record the names of the children born, so searches may need to be done by both the child’s and the parents’ names.

Vital Records in Utah

In Utah, the civil registration of births, deaths, and marriages developed slowly, culminating with a statewide system of recording births and deaths beginning in 1905. Certificates for births and deaths from then until the present can be ordered through the Utah Department of Health online or from:

Office of Vital Records and Statistics
P.O. Box 141012
Salt Lake City, UT 84114-1012

In addition to government-produced vital records, there are a variety of records not recorded in original registers, such as midwives’ and physicians’ records. Many have been microfilmed and are accessible through the FHL under the heading of Utah, [County], Vital Records. The LDS Church also maintains an extensive array of vital statistics in its own church records. For a comprehensive discussion of various types of records, see Laureen Richardson Jaussi and Gloria Duncan Chaston’s Genealogical Records in Utah (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1974).
