Chronicling America Historical Newspapers

Chronicling America is a website that offers access to information about historic newspapers and select digitized newspaper pages. It is produced by the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Library of Congress (LC). The NDNP aims to create a long-term, internet-based, searchable database of U.S. newspapers, complete with descriptive information and select digitization of historic pages. With NEH support, this valuable digital resource will be developed and permanently maintained at the Library of Congress. The NEH award program will fund the contribution of content from all U.S. states and territories over time.

Newspapers can be an excellent source of data for the determined researcher. Among the local news items, a family historian may find vital statistics information in birth notices, marriage notices, and obituaries. These are particularly useful for periods predating public record keeping of vital statistics, or when the public records have been lost or destroyed. Also noteworthy are the social columns that give attention to news of a personal nature, such as anniversaries, graduations, promotions, and reunions; legal notices, concerning probate proceedings, divorce cases, and estate or tax sales; advertisements, or wanted notices for missing persons, which often include personal details, last known whereabouts, and the intended destination; and special editions or columns commemorating local historical events. It is important to keep in mind that newspapers are a secondary source of information, and details are somewhat inaccurate.

The United States Newspaper collection provides links to digital newspapers which can be found online from the historical to modern day. While most of these are free to view and download, some may not. In this case we try to provide a $ sign after the link to let you know the newspaper is found on a subscription website. We also feature transcriptions from historical newspapers when available. Also see our United States obituary collections.
