NEWPORT -- Stella Lee Washam Tilley, 98, of Newport died Fri, Oct. 11, at Newport. Born in Jackson Co, she was co-owner of Miller's Store at Ingleside, a retired farmer and a homemaker. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Newport. Survivors include two daughters, Norma Lee Miller and Emma Jean Whybrew, both of Newport; one son, Kenneth Ray Miller of Bradford; four sisters, Frances Alvis of Newport and Alice Molett, Neta Beele Milheim and Helen Bender, all of Michigan; one brother, Tommy Washam of Monroe City, Mo.; four grandchildren, Margaret Marshall of Newport, Phil Whybrew of Jonesboro, Todd Miller of Bradford and Rodney Miller of Batesville; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, C.E. Miller; her second husband Lawrence Tilley; two brothers; and one sister. Funeral services will be Mon. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Phil Alvis, Herbert McFarland, Gus Ragsdale, Delmar Courtney, the Rev. Anna Pauline "Polly" Washam, 82, of Floral, died Mon, Feb 11, 2002 at Batesville. She was born Mar 20, 1919 in Cairo, Illinois, to George and Della Thornton. She was a homemaker and a member of the Floral Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Phillip Sexton of Floral and Jerry Sexton of Batesville; two daughters, Phyllis Pearson of Judsonia and Jonna Williams of Pangburn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John Washam; a grandson; two half brothers; and three sisters including Georgia Rhoades of Floral. The funeral will be Thur at Floral Baptist Church with Jim Dillard officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cem. The pallbearers will be Evon Sharp, Lanny Frazier, Robert Harmon, Daryl Brown and Jerry Robbins.

Alice A. "Boogie" Molett, 94, a resident of Utica for 70 years, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, in Troy. She was born Aug. 23, 1911, in Newport, Ark. Mrs. Molett retired as a janitor for General Motors Corp. She loved to cook and relatives said she was especially well known for her delicious chocolate chip cookies. She enjoyed traveling and family gatherings, and treasured her family. She is survived by her children, Charles (Barbara) Molett, Alice Liz Burns, Raymond (Andrea) Molett, Anita Tipton and Janice Keen; siblings, Frances Alvis of Arkansas, Helen Bender of Eastpointe and Anitabelle (Bill) Wilham; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Baxter "Jack" Molett, on April 19, 1978. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 8459 Hall Road (three blocks east of Van Dyke), Utica, with the Rev. Howard Casey, Shelby Bible Church, officiating. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Cemetery, Troy.

MONROE CITY - James Thomas (Tom) Washam, 72, of Monroe City, died Wed, Sep 3, 2003, at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia. Funeral services will be today at the Garner Funeral Chapel in Monroe City. A second service will be Sep 6, at the Jackson Funeral Chapel in Newport, Ark. Burial will be at Walnut Grove Cem in Newport. Mr. Washam was born Jun 10, 1931, in Newport, Ark, Jackson Co, to Donald and Myrtle Mae Molett Washam. He was married to Velma Wagster on Jun 10, 1949, in Augusta, Ark. She survives. Other survivors include four sisters, Alice Molett of Utica, Mich., Frances Alvis of Newport, Ark., and Helen Bender and Nita B. Milhem, both of Eastpointe, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Danny Phillip; three brothers, Glen Wallace, Donald Washam and John Washam; and three sisters, Verbal Rossow, Ethyl Washam and Stella Tilley. Mr. Washam attended Newport schools and attended the Victory Baptist Church. He lived in Williamston, Mich., for many years, where he was an electrical lineman for several large companies. He moved to Monroe City 22 years ago where he was a lineman and served as supervisor for the city of Monroe electrical department. He was a member of local No. 17 of the I.B.E.W.

Cleo Doreen (McCamey) Bailey died Monday, Nov 20, 2000, at Rosewood Care Center. Services will be Friday at Strode Chapel. Interment will be at Coyle Cemetery. She was born in Coyle Feb 8, 1920, to Loyde D. and Pearl Marie (Arnett) McCamey. During her early years she attended Coyle School and was a member of the Christian Church. In 1925, her family moved to Oklahoma City where she finished her schooling. She was married to Charles "Bus" Osborn in Frederick June 7, 1936. The couple lived in California for a while but moved back to Oklahoma City. To this marriage two daughters, Marie Elizabeth and Faye "Lorraine" were born. The marriage ended in divorce. During WW II, Cleo worked at Tinker Air Force Base. In 1948 she married William Washam. To this marriage William Loyde was born. The marriage ended in divorce. Later, Cleo married Charles Raymond Bailey. To this marriage, Charles Loyde Bailey was born. She moved to Guthrie where she lived until 1984 when she moved to Rosewood Care Center. She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Twila Marie McCamey; a brother, John Arthur McCamey; a daughter, Faye "Lorraine" (Osborn) Cundiff; and a grandson, William Edgar "Eddie" Long Jr. Survivors include a daughter Marie Elizabeth (Osborn) Jones and her husband, Marvin, of Stillwater; two sons, William Loyde "Bill" Washam, of Vinita, and Charles Loyde Bailey Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth, of Ripley; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be John Thomas Long, of Newcastle, Charles Loyde Bailey Jr. and Jake Henry Bailey, of Ripley, David McKee, David McKee Jr. and Joe McKee, all of Coyle. John Leverich will be honorary pallbearer.

Harold Tudor Aug 2, 1930 - Feb 13, 2007 Harry was a very special husband, father, grandpa and friend, and will always be remembered with great kindness and love by all who knew him. Harry was born in Omaha, NE, and in 1939 his family settled in San Francisco. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1954 and graduated from UC Berkeley in 1956 with a BS in electrical engineering. He married Janet Washam in 1955, and in 1956 they moved to South San Francisco where they made their home for the next 51 years. They were blessed with three children, Steven, Linda and Patricia. Harry appreciated Linda's husband, Larry, and adored their three daughters, Annie, Kate and Jane. He is also known for caring for his extended family with generosity and respect. Harry spent most of his career at Harris Farinon as manager of technical writing. He was a devoted member of the Lake Merced Church of Christ, where he served as treasurer and member of the board of trustees. Harry also served on the South San Francisco School District Personnel Commission. Harry's faith was central to his life. He was a diligent student of the Scriptures, led by example and was a man of great compassion. He had a quick wit and was a master of the pun. Funeral Services will be held on Mon, Febr 19th, at the Lake Merced Church of Christ in SF, followed by a luncheon reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mission Hospice, 1900 O'Farrell St., Suite 200, San Mateo, CA 94403, or a charity of your choice.

She was age 4 in the 1920 Loup, Sherman, NE census & age 14 in the 1930 La Crescenta, Los Angeles, CA census.  Ben md 2nd) Lola Jean Vice 1 Jun 1955 Los Angeles Co, CA.  In 1966, MGM created one of the most favorite and treasured Christmas cartoons in history, "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas." "A long-time stalwart of the Jones unit whose talents complemented those of his colleague Ken Harris. Jones, in the first volume of his autobiography, pens a warm and moving tribute to (Ben) Washam. Washam was one of the Jones staffers who followed him to MGM to work on the Tom and Jerry series there after the closure of the Warner Brothers animation Studio. Unlike Harris, Abe Levitow and Maurice Noble of the Jones unit, Washam did not get a chance to direct at Warner Brothers. He did go on to direct cartoons at MGM. A native of Arkansas, Washam was allegedly the source of the famous Daffy Duck line in Duck Amuck (Jones, 1953), Thanks for the sour persimmons, cousin!" Along with Sid Marcus, Washam received story credit for Gone Batty. (McKimson, 1954)."

"September 14, 1981

Dear Chuck,

On my tenth birthday my father gave me a mule. It was truly love at first sight. I named him Spencer after a rifle I saw advertised in a Sears, Roebuck catalog. The spring and summer that followed were the most wonderful in my memory. We rode over and through every hill and swamp in northeast Arkansas.
In the fall after the crops were in, everybody went to the county fair, especially Spencer and me. Aside from judging cows, pigs, chickens, cakes, pies and the like, stump pulling was a community favorite. The stumps were dynamited out of the ground (a few days before the fair started), then a mule was hitched to the stump. The mule that pulled the stump the greatest distance won – Spencer and me won. First prize was a Rhode Island Red Rooster and a blue ribbon with Robert E. Lee’s face painted on it with gold paint. I was so proud I kissed Spencer. Everybody laughed and my mother made me wash my face.

At this time I learned about evil. I learned evil lurks in unsuspected places and, like a spider, attacks without warning. An aunt, who later turned out to be unsavory, invited me to have a soda pop with her. Leaving Spencer eating hay and my rooster tied to a wagon wheel, we went off to the refreshment tent. Everything was fine. I even got a piece of cake. The soda pop was great – I saved half of it for Spencer. When I returned to the wagon, Spencer was gone. I grabbed a pitchfork and went looking for the thief. After looking all over the fairgrounds they finally told me that some Yankee from Chicago gave my father fifty dollars for Spencer. My devastation was completed that evening – my mother cooked my rooster for
supper.

I spent the next day planning revenge. The thought of putting a water moccasin in my father’s bed was pleasant. Then it occurred to me that anybody that mean wouldn’t be troubled by a water moccasin. By the end of the day I had concluded that I couldn’t fight them, but I could make sure that I never became one of them – so I made a vow never to become an adult, or care for an adult.
To make sure that I would never break the vow, I ate a green persimmon – eating a green persimmon was a sure way to test a person’s sincerity. Anyone who would eat a green persimmon to back up their word had to be honest. That was especially true in courtships – however, I don’t remember ever hearing of any girl eating a green persimmon.
From that time I walked into the hills and valleys of life, secure in the knowledge that I was free from adults, Yankees and unsavory aunts in particular. (It was my aunt who lured me away from Spencer with the promise of a soda pop. Deep in my heart I know that old harridan dwells in the north side of hell with all the Yankees.)
I have never mellowed over the years. My vow has not been broken, only bent a little. So it is that I can tell you that you are one of the few adults I have come to love and respect.
My reason for telling you this is because I want to wish you a happy birthday and impress upon you that such a wish coming from me is no small effort.

Bob’s Big Boy photograph of the model which became the symbol used by Bob’s Restaurants for over 60 years! His name was Richard Woodruff and he lived down the street from the original Bob’s Pantry located in Glendale California. The original of this picture was kept in Richard’s wallet and was signed on the back by Bob Wain, who started Bob’s in the 1930’s. Richard was a fat little boy who hung around the small Bob’s Panty on Colorado Street. On one occasion little Richard asked if he could have a hamburger with two pieces of meat on it. Now known as the first “double-decker” hamburger!  Ben Washam, the well-known Warner Bros. animation artist designed the famous “Fat-Boy” logo in the 1940’s after little Richard Woodruff. This photo shows a little older and bigger Richard posing in front of the original Bob’s Pantry located on Colorado Street in Glendale holding the now famous “double-decker” hamburger.

 

 

The picture: "Locked out but happy" shows animators: Ben Washam (later president of Local 839), Roy Laupenberger, unknown, Paul Marin, Martha Goldman (Sigall). Schlesinger, cartoons producer for Warner Bros. tried to lock out the Guild animators. "Ben drew the Grinch for me when I was a kid and I still have it. He drew it so fast it looked like he had practice. I am his brother Oscar's first grandson. Ben used to come up here to Northern CA and draw for us once in a while. My sisters used to spend summer vacation with Ben and Jean. Ben drew the poster for my sister's masters recital at Pepperdine in the early 80s. Ben and Oscar loved life and were great fun to be around."

Mr. Washam was born Oct. 25, 1945, in Los Angeles.  He had a love for all animals, especially horses, which he shod for 36 years. Mr. Washam enjoyed the simple things in life, shooting the breeze, old friends, old truck and an old dog sitting shotgun.  His family remembers him as a gentle soul who wore plain clothes and used colorful language.  He had a country charm, not compromised in the heart of the city or presence of high society and was known as the salt of the earth from top to toe.  Survivors include his sons, Benjamin Washam and T.J. Washam of Snoqualmie; daughter Grace Washam of Snoqualmie; and mother Edleen Washam of North Bend.  A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 31911 E. 1.5.4.3.2.7.3.B.1  John William Washam “Will” born 24 Sep 1860 Huntersville, Mecklenburg, NC, the son of Alfred Washam and Harriet Riley. Alfred served in the Confederate Army with North Carolina Co. K as a private. Feb. 1864, while guarding prisoners, Alfred was wounded and recovered at Camp Winder Hospital in Richmond, VA. Betty Wall Washam, Mrs. Washam, 84, of Charlotte, died December 20, 2004 at Presbyterian Hospital. She was born May 31, 1920, in Mt. Pleasant and grew up in Concord. She was a daughter of the late Weldon T. Wall and Katie Foil Barringer Wall. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Washam was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Washam Scism. Mrs. Washam attended Woman's College in Greensboro and retired in 1982 from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system. Since 1952 she has been a member of Purcell United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Charles J. "Jack"Washam Jr.; a son, C. Jack Washam III and his wife, Ware, of Edina, Minn.; a former son-in-law, Darryel Scism of Salisbury; three grandchildren, Amy Scism of New York, Andy Scism of California and Lauren Washam of Minn.; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Washam will be Thur, Dec 23rd. Entombment will be at Forest Lawn West Cem.
