In memory: Carrie Bennett

A fiercely independent woman who lived alone in her Wallowa home until a week before she passed away of natural causes at age 87 in Wallowa Memorial Hospital, Carrie Emma Bennett leaves behind a large extended family. From four children born to her marriage to the late Clyde H. Bennett came 14 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 10 great- great-grandchildren.

With the help of niece Rheesa Bennett who tended to her needs on a daily basis, Carrie Bennett maintained her sense of humor to the very end, said son Bob Bennett.

Born and raised in Wenatchee, Wash., Carrie Buckles met Clyde Bennett of Wallowa County while he was visiting relatives in Wenatchee. They got married Oct. 8, 1934, when Carrie was 18 and moved to Wallowa where she began a lifetime of being a housewife and a mother.

In addition to enjoying her role as a mother, Bennett loved to garden and raised many crops of corn, potatoes, lettuce, peas and carrots. Active in the Church of Christ, she and fellow church members spent many hours entertaining at the Wallowa Valley Care Center where she excelled in singing and playing the harmonica. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, embroidering and crocheting.

Not one to travel very much, Bennett did make it to the Wenatchee area for months at a time where she enjoyed visiting with many family members.

She lived in the same house for 62 years, a house located behind Wallowa’s Oregon Department of Forestry complex along Bear Creek Road.

Still living in Wallowa are sons Ron and Bob Bennett, while third son Vernon Bennett lives in Enterprise. Daughter Geneva Eckley lives in Nampa, Idaho.

Husband Clyde passed away in 1984 and Carrie Bennett never remarried. “She was independent,” said son Bob Bennett. “She didn’t want to bother anybody else.”
