Uebelacker, Hallie Dell Montgomery – Obituary

Hallie Dell Uebelacker, 88, of Ellensburg passed away on Thursday, September 5, 1996 at Kittitas Valley Regional Rehab Center in Ellensburg. She was born in Ellensburg, Washington on October 27, 1907, a daughter of William Thomas and Margaret Olive (Ferguson) Montgomery. Hallie’s mother’s family arrived in the Kittitas Valley in 1872, crossing Snoqualmie Pass in wagons and on horseback.

Her father drove an eight horse hitch freight wagon from the Dallas, Oregon to Waterville, Washington Territory. After his many trips through the Valley, he decided to settle in the Valley. He filed a homestead claim on 160 acres in the Broadview District. This is where Hallie and her four sisters were born and raised. Her mother made all the clothes for her and the five girls, making their underwear out of flour sacks, often the name of the miller was left across their seat.

Hallie met her future husband Urban Leo Uebelacker at a dance in 1923 and they dated until Hallie graduated from high school in 1927. They were married June 23rd, 1928. With the start of the Depression, Hallie and Urban decided to stay on her parents’ farm to help her father. They stayed on the farm until the death of Hallie’s mother in 1930. Hallie worked for the Assessor’s Office for eight years, for the Kittitas Reclamation District for 5 years and then for the City Clerks Office for thirteen years, until retiring in 1970. Following retirement, she and Urban sold the home that they had built in 1948 and wintered four months of the year in Mesa, Arizona, and spent the summer months in Ellensburg.

Hallie was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church, the St. Andrews Alter Society, the Moose Lodge, the Eagles Lodge, the Bridge Club and the Golf and Country Club. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed crocheting, embroidering and golf.

She is survived by her nephew, Donald L. Uebelacker of Yakima, WA and niece, Sasie Lou Bates of Ellensburg; Morris Uebelacker of Roslyn, WA and Darcy Warren of Portland, OR; and numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and four sisters.

Viewing will take place at Steward and Williams Chapel on Sunday, September 8, 1996 from 1:00 p.m. until 4 p.m. Scripture reading will be at St. Andrews Catholic Church on Sunday, September 8, 1996 at 7:00 p.m. with Mass of the Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 9, 1996.
