Porter, George Washington, Ferrisburgh, Vergennes p. o., was born in Ferrisburgh, Vt., in 1810. He was married in March, 1834, to Julia Harris, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1809. They had ten children born to them, three of whom are now living — George (who enlisted in the Eleventh Vermont Regiment, served three years and was detailed as musician), Ursilla (who married William Bard), and Louisa (who was married to Austen Booth). George Washington Porter was a son of Noah and Polly (Pangburn) Porter. Mrs. Porter was born in Champlain, N. Y., and Mr. Porter was born in Ferrisburgh, Vt. They had a family of ten children, three of whom are now living — Maria, George W., and Eunice Jane. Noah died in 1857 and Polly died in 1850. Noah, jr., was a son of Noah, sr., who was born in New Hampshire and settled in Ferrisburgh, Vt., with his family, and was at that time one of the three settlers of the town. He was a great hunter. He died aged ninety-four years. George Washington Porter, although but a child at the time, remembers distinctly seeing the soldiers at the time of the attack of the British, at Fort Cassin, the Americans having about 300 men under the command of Captain Cassin, and the British, having about 1,500 men, were repelled by the Americans.
