Hopkins County Texas Genealogy contains 59 biographical sketches and 2 town directories.
Hopkins County Texas was originally inhabited by the Caddo Tribe, who later became displaced by the arrival of the Cherokee Tribe. The Cherokees being displaced themselves from the Smokey Mountain region, actively campaigned against white settlers until they were defeated in 1839 by General Douglass. After 1839, white settlers, free from attacks, came more frequently, though the first white settler was said to have arrived in 1837.
Hopkins County was created in 1846 from Lamar and Nacogdoches counties. In 1870 part of Hopkins County was set apart for Rains and Delta Counties. And in 1871 a small portion of Hopkins was given back to Lamar County.
