has been suppressed, as far as it could be. But from passengers we learn that he has lost heavily in prisoners, in guns, wagons, and supplies and in killed, wounded, deserters and stragglers. He will not be able, on the south side of the Tennessee, to rally more than half the number which he had in Middle Tennessee. The destiny of Chattanooga is entirely with Rosecrans. Just so long as he may halt on the North side of the Tennessee, Bragg will be able to hold Chattanooga and lower East Tennessee are in his possession. My information is, that there is a large part of Burnside's Army in and near Summerset, KY, and it is believed that they will soon make a descent upon this place, or some other point near here. You may depend upon it, my prophesy in relation to E.T. will be realized are long.
The crisis is upon us. My opinion is that Vicksburg fell on the 24th June. Johnson's Army is totally unable to assail or resist Grant. The Yankees are breaking up all communications in and around Richmond and threatening the City itself. They are also breaking up the roads in N.C. with no body to question their progress. Lee will not be able to escape from Maryland with more than half the men he took with him, and general discontent every where prevails among the soldiers, leading to frequent desertion and straggling. What an awful doom ahead of us for the South!
All is usual health. Kittie is feeble.

To: Robert Love Jno. Baxter,
Carter County, East Tennessee.

Concerning the Tract of land that we have jointly in Henry County, Tennessee, I can say to you that we are all tolerable well at present, but since you last wrote, I have lost my dear companion, and have had a great deal of trouble in the bereavement that has taken place, but the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, and we must submit to his will.
I should like, when you receive these lines, you would write to me, as I am anxious to sell my lands in Tennessee and what you think I could get for it per acre. I have been anxious to see you, and hoped you could visit me here in Spartanburg, and would be glad to have your advice, in the matter, as we are both interested. I would say to you further, if you cannot pay me a visit, if you would appoint sometime when you could be at Asheville or Sulphur Springs next Spring, I would try and meet you there, if you will appoint a time and write to me. I am truly anxious that you will answer this letter, as I understand that you have been on the Lands. I was out at Asheville and
