and all that can concern it.

                The Lost Lover

        No peaceful ground shall ever bring
        That pretty face to me;
        It echoes but with the wing
        As memory calls to thee
        Lost in oblivion are my woes
        When compared to thine,
        No land is free but for foes
        No mercy for thy kind.
        Why compose thy disturbed mind?
        For all such woes are given,
        But to disturb that heart of thine,
        I fear your peace art driven

                The Gold

        From South the mail man comes,
        Bringing news of glad joy;
        In California, there is a home,
        Where gold is made a toy.

        So listen to the news that comes,
        Undoubted to our ear;
        It heaves a hope that future homes
        In the South will appear.

        The gold! The gold! is the cry,
        That rings from mount or dale!
        To California! is the sigh;
        We'll meet upon its vale

        Mighty wealth is the cry from all;
        It rings from every lip;
        Unmocked it comers from little and tall,
        From dale or mountain tip.

        The gold! The gold! again is heard;
        It springs to distant lands,
        It brings, it brings a motly herd
        To mix upon the sands.
