Sutherland, William Morrow

The following data is extracted from Douglas County, Oregon Obituaries.

Private family services for William Morrow Sutherland, 76, of Charleston, will be held in Heppner where he will be laid to rest in the Morrow family plot beside his father and mother. Mr. Sutherland died in Roseburg of complications of age on Jan. 19, 1995. He was born to Mr. and Mrs. Martin VanBuren Sutherland on Oct. 11, 1918.

He attended Lincoln High School in Portland, then attended Reed College and majored in economics, graduated in 1941. Immediately following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, becoming a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. After separation from the Army, he held various sales positions until the late 1950s. He moved to Charleston in 1961 and bought the fishing vessel "Legend" and became a commercial fisherman. He joined the South Coast Trollers Association at its inception and was elected treasurer for a two-year period.

When land use planning began, he was invited to join the Charleston area zoning group. Later he and others began a group to form a South Slough Sanctuary to protect the estuary of this region. He was appointed to the position of commissioner of the South Slough Estuarine Reserve Commission by Gov. Victor Atiyeh for a two year term.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille, of North Bend; a son, William L. Sutherland of Santa Cruz, California; a daughter, Mary Hopson of Los Alamos, NM; an older brother Donald Morrow Sutherland of Keizer; a sister, Katherine Nelson of Bend; a grandson, Matthew Huddleson of San Francisco, Calif.; two grandsons, Michael and Gabriel Hopson of Los Alamos; two stepsons, Stanley and Patrick Main; two step granddaughters, Jeannette Osborn and Patty Hurst; three step grandsons, Aaron, Andrew and Dominic Main; one step great granddaughter and three step great grandsons. He was preceded in death by his father and mother.
