Coleman, R. H.

The following data is extracted from Counties Of Todd And Christian, Kentucky - Todd.

R. H. COLEMAN was born in Dinwiddie County, Va., on July 24, 1840, and is a son of Edmund N. and Eliza (Watkins) Coleman. The parents were both natives of Virginia, the father being born there on September 29, 1797; the mother on October 17, 1798; the former was of Irish descent, the mother of Welsh. When subject was about eighteen months old the parents came to Logan County, Ky. They lived there only one year, and then came to this county; here they settled on the farm now owned by subject, and here the father died on April 28, 1867, the mother on January 27, 1877. Both were members of the Methodist Church. Subject was the youngest of a family of seven children, of whom two are living: Mary A., wife of John W. Clark, of Logan County, and Robert H. The latter's education was received in the schools of the county. He began to learn the carpenter's trade, but did not keep it up very long; he commenced for himself when twenty-one. He now owns about 240 acres, with about 200 acres in cultivation. Mr. Coleman was married in this county on February 18, 1873, to Miss Sallie E. Chesnut, a daughter of John and Ruth (Vance) Chesnut. The father was a native of South Carolina. The mother was born near Mecklenburg, S. C. Both were early settlers in this county. Mrs. Coleman was born here on February 6, 1851. Three children have blessed this union, viz.: Lella, Robert N. and Nora. Mr. Coleman is a member of the Methodist Church, and Mrs. Coleman of the Cumberland Presbyterian denomination. Mr. Coleman has also been identified with the Masonic, Grange, and Knights of Honor fraternities.
