The following data is extracted from Counties Of Todd And Christian, Kentucky - Todd.
GEORGE E. GARTH was born December 4, 1839, at the old Garth homestead, in Todd County, Ky., where he grew to manhood. His father, William Anderson Garth,- was a native of Albemarle County, Va., where he was born in 1796. He removed to Todd County, Ky., in 1810, where he died in 1843. He was the son of Elijah Garth, of Virginia, who was born in Albemarle County in 1773, and died here in 1816. By his fearless activity he rescued many lives at the burning of the theater in Richmond, Va. His father, Thomas Garth, was of Scotch descent. Subject's mother, Elizabeth B., daughter of George and Mary (Baker) Saffarans, of Gallatin, Tenn., was born in 1809, married in 1829, and is still living. To her and husband were born: Webb C., Mary S. (Bell), Julia T. (Fort), Martha T. (Todd), subject, Elizabeth V. (Ware) and William A., who died at San Antonio, Tex. Subject was favored with a good collegiate education, and is a man of extensive reading. He was married April 15, 1862, to Miss Louisa E., daughter of Edmund and Louisa (Anderson) Ware, of Todd County, and this union has been blessed with five children, viz: Nora L., Ella W., William E., George E., Jr., and Bessie. Mr. Garth is a farmer, and has 236 acres of very valuable and productive land, well improved, and in a fair state of cultivation. His attention is largely directed to Jersey cattle, Southdown sheep and Berkshire hogs. Mr. G. is a Granger and a Democrat.
