ELIJAH C. BROWN. Mention has already been made of this gentleman's ancestors, and will be found in the chapter devoted to Elkton District. He is a son of Preston and Rosena Brown, and was born near Hadensville, Todd County, on the 30th day of October, 1845. He was reared on his father's farm, meanwhile attending the common schools, after which he attended school in Clarksville, Tenn. In the fall of 1861 he enlisted as a soldier iii the Confederate Army, and followed the fortunes of his command to the close of the war. He was first a member of an independent cavalry company, under Captain Biggs. After the service of the first year the company was made the body-guard of Gen. Breckinridge, and in the fall of 1863 was attached to Gen. Wheeler's command, with whom it remained until the close of the war. Mr. Brown participated in the battles of Fort Donelson and Stone River, was made a prisoner of war on the bank of Cumberland River, between Clarksville and Nashville, Tenn., in the early part of 1864, and was retained until the end of the war, principally in Camp Morton and Fort Delaware. Since the war Mr. Brown has turned his attention to farming, in which he has been successful. He owns a valuable farm of 350 acres, located one mile south of Elkton. On the 2d of November, 1868, he married Miss Sallie R., daughter of James M. and Adeline (Atkins) Graham. She was born in Todd County March 4, 1847, and both father and mother are deceased. They have a family of three children, viz.: Rosa A., Walter T. and Seymour H. Brown. Mr. Brown is a member of the I. O. 0. F.
