Mobley, William E., Elder

The following data is extracted from Counties Of Todd And Christian, Kentucky - Todd.

ELDER WILLIAM E. MOBLEY. Few among the deserving citizens of Todd County are more worthy, genial and intelligent than the gentleman whose name appears at the head of this brief sketch. He was born in Todd County, Ky., March 2, 1824, and has always retained his residence here. His father, Claburn Mobley, was born near Columbia, S. C., in 1787; removed to middle Tennessee in childhood, thence to Todd County, Ky., about 1807, where he died in 1867. He was the son of William Mobley. Claburn's wife, Elizabeth (Ellison), was born in Georgia, 1795, and died in 1862. Their children are: subject, Nancy (Harris), Reuben J., John F. and Claburn, Jr. In youth, subject was favored with good educational advantages, and is a man of general and extensive reading, especially in the department of theology. He was married in 1849 to Miss Mary E., daughter of Henry T. and Nancy (Daniel) Burrus, of Todd County. She was born in 1825. The result of this union is Mary S. (Kenner), Ella J. (Smith), Luther, Bettie H. and James B. Subject is an honored member of the Masonic fraternity. He has never taken an active part in politics, but was an unequivocal Union man during the late struggle. In 1851 he became a member of the Christian Church, and has been an active and useful factor in that energetic denomination. In 1852 he commenced preaching, and has been pastor of Roaring Springs Church in Trigg County nearly twenty-six years; of Elkton Church about thirty years, and of Berea Church, in Logan County, twenty-four years. These churches have occupied three Sabbaths in each month, and the remainder of the time has been applied to missionary work, somewhat extensive in its nature. Parson Mobley has received many disciples into the church, has married many people, and has once only been hindered from work by sickness.
