Utley, James A.

The following data is extracted from Counties Of Todd And Christian, Kentucky - Todd.

JAMES A. UTLEY was born in 1851, in Muhlenburg County, Ky. His parents were William J. and Caroline (Vinston) Utley, both natives of Kentucky. The father was a farmer. His death occurred in 1854, aged thirty-six. He was a member of the Baptist Church. The mother died of typhoid fever, the same disease which proved fatal to her husband, her death occurring two weeks later than that of her husband. Her age was thirty-two. She also was a member of the Baptist Church. These parents left two children-Fannie F., now the wife of George M. Bobbitt, and James A. The latter began for himself at the age of eighteen years. He ran a saw-mill for seven years, principally for Miller & Robinson. He then began farming, which business has engaged his attention ever since. He has been very successful in business considering that he began without means. In this county he owns 205 acres of land. In Muhlenburg County he controls 208 acres. He has a nice home and a happy and encouraging prospect. He is one of the responsible, well-to-do men of the county. o He was married January, 1874, to Miss Martha A. Shutt, daughter of Jefferson and Angeline Shutt, of Muhlenburg County, Ky. Floyd R. is their child. Mr. Shutts' death occurred July 8, 1860, aged thirty-five years. Mrs. Shutts' death occurred July 5, 1861, aged twenty-eight years. Both were members of the Christian Church. Mr. and Mrs. Utley are members of the Baptist Church. Mr. Utley is a member of the Masonic order.
