Harvard, J. J.
The following data is extracted from Biographies of Pulaski County, Georgia.
Jerry Jordan Harvard, the son of H. M. and Jane Harvard, was born at Snow Spring in Dooly County, Georgia, in 1859. In 1.883 he was married to Sallie Bell Eubanks, to which union were born three sons and one daughter, who died in infancy. His sons were John B. Harvard, who married Daisy Fountain, both of whom died in 1917, leaving two sons, John B. and Fountain, who were reared by their grandparents; and H. L. Harvard, deceased, who married Mae Le Claire. His only surviving child is J. J. Harvard, Jr., who married Emmie Mason, and to this union was born a son, Jere Harvard. He also reared an adopted daughter, Janie Bell Harvard, deceased, who married A. M. Bass. She is survived by one son, Albert Bass, Jr.
During early manhood J. J. Harvard came to Hawkinsville, and in 1890 he bought the Hawkinsville Dispatch and News, which paper he edited and published for almost thirty-five years. During this time this publication was ever to be found serving the best interests of Hawkinsville, Pulaski County, and the State.
Because of his unusual strength of character, his wisdom and integrity, he was continuously called upon for public service. He served for many years upon the County Democratic Committee, the State Democratic Committee, as a member of the Board of Aldermen, as Master of Mount Hope Lodge, No. 9, F. & A. M., and as a charter member of the Woodmen of the World.
To him is due much of the credit for the present excellent school system. He was a member of the first Board of Education, serving in that capacity for many years, voluntarily retiring there from, later to be reelected and to remain a member until his death.
As an officer and leader in the Methodist Church he had no superior, giving liberally of his time and money. For almost half a century he had an active interest in every movement for the betterment of Pulaski County.
He died at his home on February 13, 1926.
