Balloch, George Williamson
The following data is extracted from History of the Town of Cornish, Sullivan County, New Hampshire.
2. GEORGE WILLIAMSON2 BALLOCH (James1) was b. Dec. 26, 1798, in Cornish; m. Sept. 19, 1825, Amanda West of Claremont, b. in St. Albans, Vt., June 23, 1798, and d. at Washington, D. C., Dec. 22, 1876. Mr. Balloch was a tall, straight man of large and portly carriage. In "military times" he led the ranks of the Light Inf. for many years. His majestic figure, once seen there, was always remembered. Except a few years spent in West Claremont as a butcher, he, as a farmer, spent his life chiefly in Cornish. He d. in Windsor, Vt., Sept. 2, 1870. Children:
i. GEORGE WILLIAMSON, JR., b. in West Claremont Dec. 3, 1825; m. April 18, 1849, Martha J. Palmer of Charlestown, b. in Saxtons River, Vt., May 4, 1823. Six children, all b. in Great Falls, except the first, who was b. in West Claremont. She d. in Washington, D. C., Dec. 24, 1876. Mr. Balloch's common school education was supplemented by two terms at the N. E. Academy at Windsor, Vt., and three years at the military school at Norwich, Vt., graduating in 1847. In 1863 he received the honorary degree of A.M. from this institution. He filled different positions in railway service from 1847 to 1856, with residence in Wakefield, Mass., Great Falls and Somersworth. Was also town clerk of the latter place from 1856-1858. In Sept., 1861, he enlisted a large part of a Co. for the 5th Regt. N. H. Vols. and on Oct. 11, following, was commissioned 1st Lieut. of Co. D. In July, 1862, he was appointed Capt. and Commissary of Subsistence and later was commissioned as Lieut.-Col. in Gen. Howard's Corps, performing valuable services in all these ranks. After the close of the war, his residence having been transferred to Washington, D. C., he was promoted to various positions of trust and honor in the city. In Aug., 1866, he was promoted to Brig.Gen- of Vols., to date from 'March 13, 1865, for meritorious service in the subsistence dept. during the war. He was alsO a prominent Free-Mason. G. IV. B., Jr., d. in Washington, D. C., May, 17, 1907.
ii. EDWIN WEST, b. in Cornish Aug. 1. 1827: m. Aug. 7, 1848, Caroline B. Hilliard of North Charlestown. He d. Oct. 1.1849; left One son.
iii. JAMES RODERIC. b. April 15. 1829, in Cornish: m. June 6, 1856, Abby A. Harlow of Cornish_. b. June 6, 1834. and d. in Lawrence, Mass., Sept. 28, 1876. He d. in Lawrence July 17, 1868. Children: They lost One (James Edwin) on June 17, 1885, aged 20.
