Barnard, Levi Nichols

The following data is extracted from History of the Town of Cornish, Sullivan County, New Hampshire.

LEVI NICHOLS BARNARD was b. Aug. 25, 1809, in Springfield, Vt., and spent most of his life in his native town. He came to Cornish in 1847 and settled on the Isaac Wellman farm where he remained a few years. He m. July 19, 1849, Eliza Wellman, dau. of Isaac and Mercy (Colton) Wellman. They had one child, a son, Isaac Wellman, b. Sept. 10, 1852, whose name was afterwards changed by act of the legislature of 1878 to Elroy Wellman Barnard, 2d. Concerning the son it is said that he was an active special correspondent for several papers both in Boston and New York. Was a member of the educational party to Europe at the World's Universal Exposition at Vienna in 1873. Was stationed at Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876. Has visited many lands and taken part in many notable gatherings.
Soon after the birth of their son, Mr. and Mrs. Barnard returned to Springfield, where 'Mrs. Barnard d. Feb. 12, 1893. Mr. Barnard retained his faculties in a remarkable degree to extreme old age. He celebrated the hundredth anniversary of his birth Aug. 25, 1909. On this joyous occasion, Sir. Barnard said: "The secret of my long life is due to three things-good habits, substantial food and keeping busy." A brother of Sir. Barnard. Frederic, aged nearly 95, was present on this occasion. Mr. Barnard d. Oct. 28, 1909, aged 100-2-3. His remains were brought to Cornish and placed beside those of his wife. By his request, many citizens of Cornish assembled on the occasion and the church bell pealed off one hundred notes.
