“Scott seems to have been the only one to preserve the Herbert name in this branch. They were, all short lived except Elizabeth end Hannah.”
I have never seen the original records in this notebook, but have tried to make, a faithful copy of the copy. Neither do I know who made the final entries.
The line of the Brooklyn Herberts was sent to my mother by Wilbur Fiske Herbert, Jr., dated April 9, 1895. It was not a Bible record, I believe, but written out by his grandmother, Emiline Rushmore Herbert, wife of Isaac Herbert of Brooklyn and daughter of Judge William Rushmore, of the same city. From what source she obtained her information I do not know, but she was extremely intelligent and well-informed. The line given is as follows:
7. Richard Herbert m. Martha, dau of Jos. Dorsett) and Elizabeth (Poling) Dorsett; she was b.Apr. 25, 1716.” (The foregoing is corroborated by Dr. Stillwell in his Hist. & Gen. Misc. Vol. III, p. 218, chapter on the Dorset Family.) Martha m. 1st John Carman, of Middletown he died in 1741 and she remarried right of administration in favor of brothers, Joseph Carmen and John Dorset, see N. J. Archives, 1st ser., Vol. 30,p. 85. Her marriage license to Richard Herbert is dated June 2, 1742. Richard Herbert of Monmouth and Martha Carmen, widow, of Monmouth, John Dorsett goes on the bond. The general opinion in the family, and the accepted by my mother, was that Richard was the one b. Jan. 22, 1698, son of Thomas Herbert of Middletown and Mary something or other. I can see no reason to doubt this and can figure out no alternative probabi1ity; see proof of same.
“Their children were:
18. Richard m. Mary, dau. of James Dorsett and Ann Pew; went to Brooklyn with his family soon after the Revolutionary War 19. James m. Mary dau. of Peter Vandeventer (m. 1. Oct.16, 1767 John Collins, bondsman) 20. Thomas (of whom I here am further record.) 21. Mary Herbert m. George Poole. (April 10,1760 a mar. lic. Was issued at Trenton to George Poole of Middletown Monmouth Co. and Mary Herbert of Middletown, spinster. Richard Herbert of Middletown gives his consent that his dau. Mary Herbert shall wed George Poole, 4 April 1760. Signed Richard Herbert Martha Herbert.)
