The following data is extracted from History of Daviess County, Missouri - Grand River Township, Daviess County, Missouri, Biographies.
Was born in Rappahannock county, Virginia, September 21, 1830. His parents, Garret and Frances Yates, were also natives of Virginia. He was educated in the common schools of his native State, and reared upon a farm. In February, 1852, he migrated to Missouri and settled in Holt county, and one year later came to this county and settled on the farm where he now lives.
Mr. Yates was united in marriage, June 29, 1854, to Miss Mary M. Bird, who was born August 8, 1836, in Howard county, Missouri. By this union they have had nine children, seven of whom are living; namely, Nancy F., born August 25, 1858; James A., born August 26, 1860; Roma E., born October 2, 1862; John E., born October 12, 1864; Alfaretta, born October 28, 1866; Charles G., born May 29, 1869; and Howard, born August 23, 1875. Mrs. Mary M. Yates died November 25, 1875. Mr. Yates married, April 26, 1876, Mrs. Mary J. Cravens, who died July 9, 1880. October 10, 1880, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Clarinda M. Clor.
