Smith one of the founders of Bannack died April 19, 1872. In 1854 be was interested in the town site of Florence on the Missouri River above Omaha and kept a ferry there. Afterwards he kept a ferry on the Elkhorn and Platte River successively. He was a member of the first Nebraska legislature.
