Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of the Brusie Funeral Home for A. J. "Slim" Bathurst, 74, of McKinleyville, Humboldt County. Bathurst died Tuesday [November 16, 1976] in McKinleyville. Born in Oakland Nov. 10, 1902, he moved to Cohasset with his parents as a small child. He was educated in the Cohasset and Chico schools. As a young man, he worked in the woods and as a construction worker.
He was employed for many years at Richardson Springs when it operated as a hotel. He then purchased the White Elephant Saloon on Second Street and operated that until World War II when he enlisted in the Navy Seabees. In 1947 he purchased the Clam Beach restaurant and bar and for the past several years has operated the B&B Bar at McKinleyville. He was a life member of Chico Lodge No. 423, Benevolent and Protective, Order of the Elks. Survivors include a brother William of Chico; a sister Florence Hatch of Oxnard; and several nieces and nephews.
Rev. Leonard Brown will officiate at the Saturday service with Chico Elks Lodge No. 423 participating. Joyce Bae will be organist. Honorary casket bearers will be Keith Straugh, Keith Barnes, Lowell Magoon Sr., Jim Bultema, Paul Lucas and Charlie Cuthbertson.
Private interment will be at Paradise Cemetery Monday. Services will also be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Paul's McKinleyville Chapel. The family requests donations be made to the Heart Association or Elks Lodge Benefit Fund in care of Brusie Funeral Home.
