Womack, William – Obituary

Wallowa, Oregon

William Womack Laid To Rest Here Tuesday

Wallowa and community were saddened Saturday afternoon to learn of the death of William Womack. While irrigating a field near his home on the Bear Creek road, Mr. Womack apparently suffered a heart attack, resulting in his immediate death. He was 75 years of age.

Mr. Womack was active daily up to the day of his death. The first of the week he had been using his Caterpillar tractor to do some custom work at the Running farm just east of town. His well cared for truck was a familiar sight on a side street near The Record, as his frequent custom was to enjoy many meals at Wallowa restaurants.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 o’clock at the Christian Church. The Rev. Earl Moore officiated. Pallbearers were Earl Schaeffer, Glen Hawkins, Jake Silver, Roland McCrae, Sam Armon and Audas Bechtel.

Mrs. Donald Scott sang “No Night There” and “Nearer My God To Thee.” She was accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Willis Ludlow. Burial was in the Wallowa cemetery.

William Womack was born March 9, 1884 at Wallowa. He was married to Nellie Pack in Idaho. Mrs. Womack died in 1934. Bill, as he was widely known, was a farmer and lived all his life in this county except a few years he spent in Idaho.

Survivors are his son Robert of Wallowa; two daughters, Mrs. Alvin (Wilma) Hawkins, Wallowa; and Mrs. Roy (Wanda) Ecker, Longview, Wash.; a brother, Osborn, Klamath Falls; and two sisters, Bertha Mink, Enterprise and Fannie Gillaspey, Medford. There are also 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren surviving.

Services were in charge of the Bollman Chapel.

Permission is from The Wallowa Record, Wallowa County, Oregon Thursday, July 2, 1959.
