Tyler, Catherine E. – Obituary

Catherine E. Tyler, 92, a life long resident of Baker County, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center.

Graveside services for Miss Tyler were held Wednesday, March 12, at 11 a.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery. Pastor Lennie Spooner of the Baker City Church of the Nazarene officiated. Vault inurnment followed.

Miss Tyler was born May 13, 1910, in Baker City. She was a daughter of Dudley Perry and Myrtle (Perkins) Tyler. She was raised in and received her education in Baker City.

After graduation, she attended Baker Business College. When that was completed she worked in law offices, did public stenographic work, worked in the Basche-Sage Hardware Co., office, Sumpter Valley Railway office, City of Baker, was a cashier for H.C. Stevens and was with Oregon State Police over 17 years.

In 1949, she formed a partnership in an insurance agency with Gordon Dunlap called the Dunlap-Tyler Insurance Company. Dunlap sold his interest to F.B. Clarke and the business was then called Clarke-Tyler Insurance Company. In 1977, Catherine retired from the business and F.B. bought out her interest.

For nine years, she was also a partner in Langrell’s Museum, in Haines. During that time, she lived in Haines, returning to Baker City in 1970 after the museum collection was sold to a California interest.

Catherine was a charter member of the Oregon Trail Riders and had a life-long love of photography and horses.
Miss Tyler is survived by her cousin, Eugene Perkins, Boise, Idaho, and long time friends, Richard and Lynne Langrell and their children, Asa, Frances, Sterling, and Robbie, Baker City.

She was preceded in death by her cousins and close friend, Etha Langrell.
