Terry, Gene Leslie – Obituary

Gene Leslie Terry, 81, of Baker City, died May 17, 2008, at his home.

His graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Rosedale Cemetery in Salem. Pastor James Leonard of the South Salem Friends Church will officiate.

Gene was born on June 7, 1926, at Washougal, Wash., to Leslie Earl and Mabelle Morley Terry. He was raised in the Waldo Hills and graduated from Silverton High School. He volunteered and served in the U.S. Army in 1944 and ’45.

Gene married Marcy Shalberg in 1949 at Portland. They moved to Salem in 1951 to farm grass seed and later Christmas trees for 55 years in the Rosedale area. Gene built the family home and worked as a carpenter for 10 years. In 1978 and ’79 Gene and Marcy traveled the United States as owner/operators for Mayflower Van Lines. The couple retired to Baker City in 2005.

Gene enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, metal detecting and prospecting as well as rock hounding and polishing agates. He also did some welding and woodworking and made 30 clocks for family members, using different types of wood.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marcy Terry; three daughters, Linda Burke, and her husband, Steve, Connie Lunday and her husband, Scott, and Bonita Newell and her husband, Dan; two sons, Bob Terry, and his wife, Montray, and Kevin Terry; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Arlene Haugstad of Salem.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rachel Center through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place Street, Baker City, OR 97814.
