Silven, Kathleen “Kay” Duffy Mrs. – Obituary

Kathleen Duffy “Kay” Silven, 90, a longtime Baker City resident, died April 9, 2006, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Services.

The recitation of the rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral. Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated after the rosary at 11 a.m. The Rev. Julian Cassar will celebrate the Mass. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Visitations will be Tuesday from noon until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Silven was born on April 4, 1916, at Prineville. She was raised at Bend by her parents Timothy E. J. and Katherine Trautner Duffy. She attended Bend High School and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Portland.

She was a 1938 graduate of the University of Oregon at Eugene where she earned a degree in journalism.

She married David Carl Silven on Nov. 22, 1939, at Portland. He practiced law there until the couple moved to Baker City where Silven joined a law firm, Hallock and Banta.

He was called to active duty with the U.S. Army Infantry in World War II. After discharge, he returned to Baker City and his law practice there.

Mrs. Silven was a member of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, the St. Francis Altar Society and the Catholic Right To Life. The practice of her religion was very important to her.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and spent many joyful years raising her children. She worked at Betty’s Books, in which she had an interest, and at the radio station KBKR. She was active in the Baker County American Red Cross, Baker County Historical Society, and the American Association of University Women.

Mrs. Silven was preceded in death by her parents, Timothy and Katherine Duffy; her husband, David C. Silven; and two brothers, Thomas and Robert Duffy.

Survivors include her children, Patricia Hanley of Baker City, Mardi Diouf of Portland, Tim Silven of Guatemala and Andy Silven of Albany; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis de Sales Choir Loft Fund through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.
