A commemorative service will be held Friday in Seattle for N. Patrick Laird and Robert L. Charnell, two oceanographers missing at sea off the coast of Hawaii since Dec. 9.
Mr. Laird is a graduate of La Grande High School, the son of W. C. and Reba Laird of La Grande. His wife is the former Nancy Hodge of La Grande. The couple has one daughter, Christy.
Other survivors include a grandmother, Verda Gray of La Grande, and a sister, Margaret Jo Schider of Mountlake Terrace, Wash.
The service is 3 p.m. Friday at University Congregational Church, 4515 16th Ave. NE, Seattle. A reception will follow. The family requests contributions in his memory be given the American Diabetes Association, 3609 SW Corbett Ave., Portland 97201.
