Emma was born April 1, 1919, to James Samuel and Lillian Pearl (Hall) Payne on the family homestead near Troy. Many of her childhood years were spent in Wallowa County.

She married Franklin Richard Hoyt on July 17, 1937, at Payette, Idaho. They raised their five children on their Catherine Creek ranch. Emma was a homemaker, but also worked the family farm, first with teams of horses and then with tractors.

Emma was known for her cooking and her generosity. Over the years, she provided foster care for many children. Emma and Frank grew a large garden and gave away a great amount of food to family, friends, strangers and the senior center.

Those who knew Emma say the Hoyts’ home was always open to friends and family that needed a place to stay. Emma was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Union.

Survivors include her husband, Frank of Union; sister, Peggy Garrison of Salem; brother, Jimmy Lee Payne and his wife, Pat, of Woodburn; sons, Jim Hoyt and his wife, Sandra, of The Dalles, Dan Hoyt and his wife, Linda, of Union, and Shaun Hoyt and his wife, Robin, of Veneta; daughters, Hilda Colvin of Tri Cities and Lora McClammy and her husband, Willis, of Pendleton; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by a sister, Wanneta Wilson; and brothers, Porter Alex (Tim) and Aaron Payne.
