Hewitt, Lloyd Dale – Obituary

Lloyd Dale Hewitt, 81, died April 30, 2007, of lung cancer.

Private family interment was Friday, May 4, at Lane Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Eugene. Lloyd’s family honored his request not to have a formal funeral.

Lloyd Dale was born to Thelma and Cecil Hewitt at Maxville. After his birth, his family returned to their home at Halfway.

Lloyd was raised at Halfway and attended schools there until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November 1943. He had his boot camp training at Farragut, Idaho, and served on an LCI L 344 in the Pacific. He participated in the Asiatic Area Campaign, American Area Campaign, the Philippine Liberation and World War II Victory. He was discharged in April 1946. He later rejoined the Naval Air Reserves in 1948 and served for two years.

He and Bonnie June Smith were married on Jan. 22, 1947, at Abbott, N.M. They had three sons. In 1951 they moved to Eugene.

That year Lloyd went to work as a freight car inspector for Southern Pacific Railroad. He retired 34 years later in 1985. Lloyd was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, LCI organization and previously the Eugene Eagles Lodge and the Eugene Moose Lodge.

Lloyd enjoyed biking, walking, golf, working crossword puzzles, reading and watching TV. He especially enjoyed the summer months in Halfway and spending time with his family and pets.

He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Robert Lloyd, who died in May of 1997; his parents; two sisters; and one brother.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; sons, Thomas, and his wife, Roxanne, of O’Fallon, Mo., and Ronald of Lakewood, Wash.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
