Butler, Mary Ann Lee – Obituary

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at two o’clock at Smith’s Funeral Chapel, for Mrs. Mary Lee Butler, 79, who died in Monmouth [August 19, 1930] after a long illness. She had been occupying a cottage at DeLake with her daughter, Mrs. Leighton Smith, and was attended by her son, Dr. Frank E. Butler, of Portland. Tuesday morning she requested that she be taken to her home in Monmouth, where she was conveyed by ambulance, and her passing occurred late the same afternoon.

Mary Lee was born June 16, 1851, on the land claim of her parents, Nicholas and Sarah Lee, near Dallas. In 1872 she was married to Orville Butler, who died May 27, 1927. Four children survive: Mrs. Smith of Monmouth; Vance L. Butler of Ventura, Cal.; J. Dean Butler of Oregon City; and Dr. Frank E. Butler of Portland; also seven grandchildren; and four sisters; Mrs. J. W. Bean of Ventura, Cal.; Mrs. Martha Odell of Nehalem; Mrs. Eliza J. Smith and Mrs. Adelaide Williams of Portland.

Mrs. Butler had been a resident of Monmouth for many years and was active in social and church work of the city. For nine years she and Mr. Butler made their home on a farm in Marion County across the Willamette from Independence, where the Oregon Electric station, Orville, was named for Mr. Butler; and is built on the Cutler farm.

Burial was in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery south of Monmouth.
